Setting off from New Delhi to plains of fertile Punjab, an introduction to foothills of mighty Himalayas which remains in sight for long hours. We stop at famous resort of Manali and while acclimatizing we make cycling day tour to heritage sites in around Manali. Beginning to cycle along the Beas River to uphill climb to Rohtang pass at 3978m than along the Chandra and Bhaga river valley to Baralacha la pass. The challenging cycling start soon after Darcha last village in the valley as the altitude goes above 4000m. After Baralacha la pass the plains of Rupshu Kharnak and never ending gataloops to Kangla jal long cycling through impressive gorge to more plains to Tsokar Lake. The final climb begins to Taglang la pass begins at Debring. You meet with Changpa nomads who still roams in vast land of Changthang. Finally spectacular descent to Indus River valley to Leh. Where trip ends. We take a day cycling trip to Khardung la pass, our last destination and the highest motorable pass in the world. Finally making an important excursion around Indus valley. Fly to Delhi and onward journey back to home.

Trip Introduction

Our trip from Leh to Manali is one of the classic Himalayan crossings of numerous passes over 5000m. After couples of day of well acclimatizing, we bike The highest and most spectacular mountain road in the world that has countless bends, countless climb and endless mountain slopes. Camps are chosen carefully to next day schedule and by looking at entire stretch of almost 500 kms. We camp at Tsokar lake in the Changthang region and visits the numbers of nomads living in the area looking after their flocks of sheeps. Following Bhaga and Chandra river we climb to final pass of Rohtang to beautiful town of Manali, where we will  have chance to explore lower regions of Himalayas.

Day 01: Delhi - Leh flight (3500m).

Day 02: Leh : acclimatize.

Day 03: Leh : acclimatize.

Day 04: Bike to Thiksey- Karu -Upshi – Rumtse (4100m), 70  Kms.

Day 05: Bike to Taglang la (5328m) – Debring – Tsokar (4500m), 84 kms, camp.

Day 06: Tsokar: Rest day or visit Karzok Tsomoriri and back to Tsokar.

Day 07: Bike to more plains – Pang (4400m), 50kms.

Day 08: Bike to Lachulang la (5060m) –Whiskey Nala, 40 kms

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Delhi international airport. Transfer to hotel for refresh. Ride on  train New Delhi – Chandigarh, depart New Delhi railway station. Arriving at Chandigarh railway station , drive to Manali by jeep 7-8 hrs. jeep will pick up from Chandigarh railway station. Arrival in Manali, transfer to hotel. 

 

Day 2:  Full day in Manali. Sight seeing around Manali.  Visit Vashisht hot spring water, Hadimba temple, Manu temple at Old Manali.

 

Day 3: Manali sight seeing.

 

Day 4: Manali – Losar ( 4000 mtrs. ) 150 kms. 6-7 hrs, jeep , drive.

Manali nestled on the foot of Rohtang pass on the bank of River Beas. Leaving Manali behind our jeep tour to Losar in Spiti valley. We pass village of Palchan. Ascent begin after palchan village as we pass through Pine and Deodar forest. We follow the right bank for Beas River. Gentle ride on hairpin bends  to Marhi. Enroute a magnificient view of Hanuman Tibba peak. 

From Marhi 16 kms  to Rohtang pass is all ascend. Rohtang pass which is one of the most important passes on the Manali-Leh Highway. A good view of Pir Panjal range all around. Peak rising above 6000 mtrs & Sona pani glacier.  Later 16 kms down to small  hemlet of Gramphoo tea shop where a road leads to  Spiti valley along the right bank of Chandra river. 17 kms further to Chatru. Before chatru we cross the bridge and along the left bank of river until chota Dara. 

along right bank of Chandra river enroute a spectacular sight of Bara Shigri glacier. Arrive at Batal 4000 mtrs. A small tea shop which awaits for all bikers, trekkers and climbers. A 14 kms short trek leads to Chandra tal lake. We proceed towards Kunzom pass on hairpin bends riding steadly. From pass first glimpse of Spiti valley. Towards west a CB 13 and CB 14 peaks rising above 6000 mtrs. We ride down to valley following a Spiti river which originate for this pass. a level road after Takcha campsite we continue to first village of Losar. Which is most beautiful and high village in Spiti valley Camp  at Losar.

 

Day 5: Losar – Rangrik, 6  hrs. bike.

Shortly after Losar we cross bridge  and follow the Spiti river on left side. Easy down stream to village of Hanse and Kiato. After Kiato we cross bridge and gentle ascend to a small plains. A level road towards Hal village. Enroute we pass  small villages before arriving at Rangrik village. Which is biggest village in Spiti valley. Far at otherside of Spiti river Kee gompa can be seen which is rising above a small hill and dominating Buddhism is Himalayan frontiers. Overnight camp at Rangrik bridge. A beautiful campsite beside Spiti river.

 

Day 6: Rangrik  – Kee – Kibber – Gete – Tashi Gang – Rangrik , 6-7 hrs. bike.

today after leaving camp cross the Rangrik bridge and we take left hand road which leads to Kee monastery. The most stunning sight in Spiti valley. Approx. 8 kms to Kee village and further to gompa. Visiting gompa we ride towards Kibber village , which is highest village in Spiti at 4205 mtrs. From Kibber we take jeep uphill and pass through Gete and Tashi Gang high altitude village above 4400 mtrs. Visiting Tashi Gang we ride down to Gete and from here a one hrs trek down to Kee monastery. And again we ride on bike to Rangril camp site for overnight stay.

 

Day 7: Rangrik – Langza – Hikkim – Komic village – Rangrik. 5-6 hrs. ride downhill.

Today after breakfast we take jeep upto Langza, Hikkim and Komic village situated above 4400 mtrs. And above Langza a magnificient view of Shilla peak rising above 6500 mtrs. These 3 village is a favourite place to find for fossils. From last village of Komik we ride downhill to Rangrik campsite. Spectular sight all on the route as we could see Spiti valley down. Overnight camp at Rangrik.

 

Day 8: Rangrik – Kaza – Pin valley, half day bike, half day rest at Pin valley.

Today we ride back towards Kaza. Sub headquarter of Spiti sub division. And continue riding downwards following left bank of Spiti river. Arrive and Attargo. We cross the bridge and enter to Pin valley. Which is known as Pin valley national park. At Pin valley we visit Kungri gompa and short walk towards Sagnum village crossing bridge at Mikkim. Retrace back to campsite.Overnight camp.

 

Day 9: Pin valley – Lalung - Dhankhar gompa – Tabo 7 / 8 hrs. bike.

Today we ride back to attargo and short riding after we ride uphill to visit Lalung and Dhankar gompa. Which has a spectacular sight rising above hill. Dhankhar it was old capital of Spiti valley. A ruins of Queen’s fort still remaining at site. We ride down and join the main road and passing through Sichling and some beautiful village enroute finally we arrive at Tabo. Which has ancient monastic comples. It’s a 1000 yrs old monastic complex . overnight camp.

 

Day 10: Tabo – Losar – Kunzom la – Chandratal lake 4270 mtrs.  6 hrs. drive and trek.

Today we ride of jeep back to Losar the first village before Kunzom la pass. We drive to Chandratal lake which is 14 kms from Batal. A rough road leads to lake. Overnight stay at Chandratal lake. Or we trek down to Chandratal from Kunzom pass which is 8 kms easy trails. 

 

Day 11: Chandratal - Gramphu – Keylong 3350 mtrs. 50 kms. Drive 64 kms. and bike 50 kms

Today from Chandratal we take jeep to Gramphu at the foot of Rohtang pass and downhill until arriving at Koksar check point. Small cluster of Dhaba tea shops at this plac and we cross the bridge and following the right bank of Chandra river. Enroute we stop at Gondhala to see the ancient fort. An oasis of green fields,all along the route. We arrive Tandi - the confluence point of River Chandra & Bhaga cross the bridge & proceed uphill to Keylong town. Overnight camp or hotel.

 

Day 12: Keylong – Jispa – Patseo 3800 mtrs. – Baralacha la – Sarchu 4200 mtrs. – Lachulang la – Pang (4500 mtrs)  201kms. Drive by jeep.

Today after Keylong , good sites all around we ride through Gar valley. Arriving at Satingiri the Tod valley start we pass  Gemur, Jispa as we ascend the serpentine road into a gorge. Ahead lies the Jispa hamlet town as we come out of the gorge & descend downhill. We arrive at Darcha 3300 mtrs. Which is starting point of most major trekking to Zanskar. We gently ride uphill later the bad road, loose rocks on route  until Patseo bridge.

After Patseo the road passes through few high altitude lakes and there are many camping sites near these lakes. After a level stretch across large meadows such as Zingzingbar a gradual ascent up the Bhaga river leads to Baralacha Pass (4892 M) the snow covered peaks of CB range and  Mulkila ranges are visible. At baralacha loose rocks on route and bad road until Kelang Sarai.  Bharatpur offer some tented tea shops. Later ride through plain until Sarchu campsite.

Today all along good conditaion road as we enter in J & K state. We arrive at   Tak after crossing Brandy and Whisky bridges. We ride uphill to cross Gata loops and up to Nakeela pass. enroute we stop for a while at Lachulung La top (5065 M) the third pass is reached after crossing the Tsarap Chu river. Arrive Pang which serves as a popular lunch stop. You will find many small parachute-made restaurants served by local Ladakhi women. Overnight camp at Pang.

 

Day 14: Pang – Tso kar (4268 mtrs) 60 kms. Or Sumdo. Bike, 6 hrs.

8 kms uphill from the Bowl-like feature of Pang we come to the plateau area of the More plains. Which leads us to more plains for 24 kms. Changpas, the Nomadic people who tend their yaks here and a few wild asses are the only sign of life on this isolated and long road. This belt not only barren but is known for fast blowing winds, sandstorms & extreme temperatures in the early morning and evenings. Fresh stream water can be considered a scarcity in this area though you might find some isolated mountain streams flowing down from the Tanglangla. The ride is easy going being a flat plateau area, but the road, which stretches on ahead, is not as smooth as it looks. There are tiny bumps all along.

After we leave the main route and follow a dirt road which turns right hand to Tso kar and Karzok Tso Moriri lake. We visit the Tso kar lake and Thugje gompa above village. Overnight camp.

 

Day 14: Tso Kar – Sumdo - Karzok , Tso Moriri lake 86 kms. Bike, 7 hrs.

Today leaving Tso kar behind we cross Polokongka la  pass and visit through Puga village. Which has a hot spring water. Finally arrivaing at Sumdo, a road leads to Mahe bridge on Indus river. We take the right hand direction to Karzok. Enroute we pass Kiagar tso and finally arrive at Tso Moriri lake. Riding along the lake we reach Karzok village. Situated on the banks of lake. Overnight camp.

 

Day 15: Karzok : rest day.  Explore around the lake and visit  Karzok phu to meet Changpa nomads.

 

Day 16: Karzok (Tso Moriri) – Taglang la – Gya. 2-3 hrs jeep,  4-5 hrs. riding 50 kms. .

Today an early departure to scale the worlds second highest pass Taglang la – 5360 mtrs. we ride on Jeep and follow the same route Sumdo, Puga , Tso Kar until more plains. Where we road diverge to Tsokar and Taglang la pass. we start biking at the foot of Taglang la pass. 17 kms biking uphill to cross Taglang la pass. which is quite challenging for even the fittest riders. Reaching the top is a very satisfying experience & then it's all down hill with smooth gradients till the base of the Pass. The Chortens along the road in the villages announce our arrival in the heart of Buddhist culture. The greenery changes the landscape, and the red coloured mountains surrounding us and reflected in the river only add to the beauty as we cross Rumtse –which offer tea shops and Gya Miru  for overnight camp.

 

Day 17: Gya - Upshi – Hemis - leh 3500 mtrs. 61 kms. Bike. 5 hrs.

For next 20 Kms we ride on some metalled & unmetalled stretches of roads & cross over the Upshi bridge across the river Indus. The river originates in China & crosses over into India somewhere in the higher regions of these great Himalayan ranges. The road condition improves considerably as we follow more traffic from the cantonment area & local villages going to Leh. Ahead lies the Thiksey Monastery, Shey monastery & the Chortens Garden before we finally enter Leh Town. The ride is easy & we can expect to reach Leh by evening. Overnight hotel.

 

Day 18:  Leh sight seeing.

Visit Stok palace, Leh palace, Shanti Stupa. Spituk monastery.

  

Day 19: Leh sight seeing: Leh – Alchi – Likir – Rizong – Leh , 6-7 hrs. jeep Alchi and Likir: These two monasteries are located near Saspol on the Srinagar-Leh road. They house many gigantic clay statue of Buddha in various forms. The primary attraction of these monasteries is , however, their 1000-year old wall painting which make a visit more than worthwhile.

Alchi Gompa, located near the small village of Saspol. It is one of the earliest monasteries built before the invading wars began in the 15th century; Alchi was built on lowlands, rather than on a hilltop as others were, in order to protect them from marauding armies. The rambling monastery has six main buildings, the Dukhang or main assembly hall, the Sun tsek or three-tiered temple; the adjoining Manjusri Lha-khang and Lotsawa Leh-khang temples; the Lha-khang Soma or New temple and the Kanjur- Lha-khan.

 

Day 20: Leh  - Delhi fly. And New Delhi Fly back home.
