Ghepan Ghat Lake Trek

Himachal has many hidden lakes, most of which are popular among Hindu pilgrims. Ghepan Ghat is tucked in the remote Central Himalayan region of Lahaul. Mostly popular among Lahauli and Himachali. This turquoise Ghepan Ghat Lake is situated at 4,130m or 13550ft above sea level. The trail to the Lake stretches high above the river, you will see spectacular sights of snow-capped peaks, meadows are carpeted with a variety of flowers, and listen to the thundering sounds of rivers and waterfalls. A moderate hike to anyone with some difficult river crossings and rugged trails. The Ghepan Goh peak dominates the Chandra valley, so throughout the trek also. The Ghepan Ghat stretching over a mile long and make its complete glacial lake with small icebergs floating on its surface. The best time to reach this lake is from Mid-June to October.

Itinerary

Day 1:
Day 1: Manali – Sissu (3050m), 40 km drive, Continue Sissu to Labrang (3300m) Trailhead 9 km drive, Trek to Camp 1 (3,870m) 4 km.

Leaving Manali you drive to Sissu. Continue to drive to the trailhead, following the road up 9 km passing by Labrang monastery.
The first part of the hike is on rocky trails and followed by alpine meadows. The two peaks of Shikhar Beh and Mukar Beh rising across the valley. A steep ascent through fields and passing by Shepherds with their flocks, you arrive at a meadow filled with wildflowers. We will camp here.

Day 2:
Camp 1 to Camp 2 (3900m), 6 km trek.

Today leaving the meadow area the trail goes to cross a raging stream. Crossing it, the trail goes high above the river and on the mountainside. A series of wildflowers path along the way. Across the river, a Sapt Dhara fall can be seen. As you climb gently up and down through rocky patches to camp 2. Along the slopes for hours, the trails are mostly used by shepherds and at some point, it can be tricky. Arrive at camp 2 a semi-cold desert land.

Day 3:
Camp 2 to Ghepan Ghat (4,130m/13550ft) - back to Camp 2, 8 km trek.

Today day 4 is a most awaited day for all of you. Leaving camp you begin over small alpine green grass hills, next the trail goes over rocky blocks and patches to the turquoise green lake of Ghepan Ghat. The Ghepan Ghat stretching over a mile long and make its complete glacial lake with small icebergs floating on its surface. To the south of Ghepan ghat is lying the famous peak of Tinan valley known as Ghepan Goh peak dominating the area. After having lunch here, explore the lake and retrace back to camp 2.

Day 4:
Camp 2 to Sissu Trailhead 10 km trek, Sissu to Manali. 40 km drive.

An early departure today from camp, in order to cross the stream before noon. The volume of the Himalayan stream always gets higher after mid-day. Retrace back to the flowered meadows and meet Shepherds and finally a short descent to the trailhead. Board on vehicle and stop to visit Labrang monastery before heading back to Manali via Atal Tunnel.
